This is one of my favorite songs. The Ke$ha version made me cry (!) the first time I heard it; it's so haunting and forlorn. I have been listening to female vocal covers of it today, and I found this Melanie one. I like her hippie vibe, but she sounds a bit too spaced out for me. Joan Baez slays. The Dylan version reigns supreme, though, because he's just so glib and apathetic. You can tell he is a bit sad, but ultimately just doesn't give a fuck. Plus I am in love with the harmonica.

The album that makes me feel like I'm 12 again, every time.

I remember poring over the cd liner notes late summer nights in the spare room in the basement, which I moved into with my journal and my boombox, when school let out. I was completely infatuated with Billy Corgan. D'arcy inspired me to play the bass. So heavy, so emo, so grunge, so rock, so beautiful, so true to me at that time. Still is.

The first track of an album I spent hundreds of childhood hours listening to. I specifically remember one summer afternoon sunbathing on my parents' deck with this playing in my walkman, wearing my first two piece swimsuit and drenched in my mom's Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil. Dug it out of the box just now as I am cleaning my basement.

I'm not mad right now...

but if I ever were, this would be a good song to remember. For those days when you just need something to scream along with at the top of your wine-soaked lungs.

Ok whatever I know that some people are all, "she sucks at rapping" (she kind of does) and, "she's capitalizing on hip hop (predominantly black) culture and using concepts of black masculinity to make money and it's more acceptable (ie white people feel more comfortable with it) and/or novel for a young white girl to rap" or whatever but I fucking love her. She raps about her cat beating up your cat for fuck's sake. That shit is fucking funny. And she's hot. And "Gucci Gucci," if you want to dissect what she means for society at large, could absolutely be interpreted as anti-designer/following trends. She's made mention of her hope that girls strike out and find their own style and be their own woman, rather than just buying that new louis bag or whatever just cause someone famous did. (Granted, she's going to start her own trends and have hella copycats but so does every celebrity and this isn't something we can attribute solely to Kreayshawn or fault her for).

Sometimes being a concerned feminist is just so goddamned humorless and I just want to dance to a beat and have a good time and not fret about how everything is totally fucked (it is).

Kreayshawn's got the cuts for summer 2011. Her and Robyn.

So glad to see Robyn getting more love in the States, even if it is because of Katy Perry. I love you, Robyn.
